One more thing. I was wondering if in a future post, you could expound on your statement that "modern" Eskrima was a failure? In your use of "modern", I'm assuming you aren't referring to any particular style? Thanks again.

I don't need to see the video. I've known Steve Grody since the mid 80's and have trained with him personally. Not only are you talking smack about Steve but also about JKD, Kali, Guro Dan Inosanto (my teacher since 1985) and all of his hundreds of thousands of followers in the Martial Arts. As far as I'm concerned this is war. I'm willing to fight and die for my honor and the honor of my teacher. Even if you beat me there is an army of fighters all over the world who are ready to beat you down! All you have to do is come down here to my gym and tell me to my face that JKD and Kali don't work in a real fight and we will fight right then and there.

Who do you think you are? Jeet Kune Do and Kali don't work in a fight? I'm a long time Jeet Kune Do and Kali practitioner. You're putting down me, my teacher and all of my brothers in the art. I'd like to personally challenge you to a fight any time and we'll see what works! I bet you're to much of a coward to post this.

This is an excellent piece. I agree fully with the idea of enjoying your cup first. One of my greatest frustrations is dealing with "partial artists" who go to a buffet.

one individual liked to drop into my sessions every 3rd Saturday of the month because he did Wing Chun the first saturday, Jiu jitsu the second saturday and karate the fourth saturday. He's only really come to a handful of classes, I treat them as beginners doing their second or third class and have them work on the same basics over and over.

People like this usually never come back after their third or fourth month.

I wish I was closer so I could train with you...mostly because the values you share reflect in many ways my own. I have been extremely grateful to my instructors as we never had belts, uniforms, and rank was secondary to skill and ability and was more a matter of respect....we trained in parks, gyms, back yards, and we gave it all we had...Guro Steve was honest, analytical, precise, and demanding and each session was 2.5hrs and I biked 15miles each way just to train. It was sad when circumstances changed and he was no longer able to maintain the schedule and had to devote more time to work. Before that happened I had been a student for 5 years and each 'phase' was a tier of experience and understanding, each one was more dense and challenging than the last, and was built on the previous. You were tested with and against your peers and your instructors and your reward for passing was access to new understanding...to teach you had to go through a weekend long 24hrs a day survival retreat with other branches of our school, show all you had learned, fight each of the other instructors alone and in mass and only then could you be allowed to 'branch' off. In addition it was expected and encouraged that you leave the school and train in another 'art' to help grow and evolve the art, to keep it vibrant and living. I appreciate the perspective of sharing the heritage of the Filipino culture, arts, and way and to allow others to learn a respect from such a proud heritage, but those who want to learn it must realize, its a road of a lifetime, not a stick on your mantle and a year in a dojo. Mabuhay!

The book is a great read! One of my favorite clients I am currently working with is a martial arts studio. I recently gathered up a few marketers and worked out a marketing plan and branding manual for the organization. The unique thing about a martial arts facility is the way people work together to help each other out and form a "family" and the hard work and dedication employees have towards the business. The instructors are influential in a positive way an helped me and my marketing team develop an ambition to help the company. The hedgehog concept shows many benefits for leaders who plan first, and then act. Consider how any changes, no matter how small, might affect the company five or ten years from now; don't only concentrate on the immediate benefits.
